The IGA Social Responsibility vision is defined as: “Together we are a force for good in our local communities. We will continue to actively address our environmental, social and community impact and inspire our shoppers to make informed choices.”

The culmination of our expanded Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda, together with the advancements made in our disclosures, saw Metcash achieve its highest-ever result under the Dow Jones Sustainability Index’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment (International Food and Staples Retailing). Its assessment placed Metcash in the 87th percentile of the index, which is a substantial increase from the 69th percentile in the prior year.

ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY

Emissions and energy reduction

Being committed to minimising our impact on the environment isn’t just something we say. We’ve established policies around lower energy consumption and emissions, and are introducing solar into our distribution centres. 

Waste and recycling

We have an ongoing focus to reduce landfill waste, and continue to work with our contractors, building managers and people to promote better recycling and recovery. 

Packaging

Sustainable packaging and packaging reduction is a high priority, and our current focus includes identifying and phasing out problematic packaging; improving packaging education and integrating more recycled content into packaging. 

RESPONSIBLE SOURCING

What we buy matters

From palm oil to eggs and even toilet paper, Metcash is committed to the responsible sourcing of products within our business, and across our independent retailer network. 

Healthier choices and communities 

We understand that healthy communities are strong communities, which is why we’re committed to providing nutritious products to all our retail partners. We also offer educational resources to promote a healthier lifestyle for our customers. 

Our private label brand and product standards

Every private label product is made to strict product specifications, designed for future-proofing. We review composition, production process, allergens, suitability to vulnerable people, safe storage, usage and disposal for our suppliers to ensure compliance. 

PEOPLE & COMMUNITY

Community and charities 

When you exist to support local communities, giving back comes naturally. We support a range of charities and encourage all our staff to do the same.

Safety and wellbeing 

The safety of our people and those we engage with is everything to us here at Metcash, and we’re dedicated to meeting our ‘Zero Harm’ target.
