As I sit down to reflect on my career journey at Mitre 10, I can’t help but be proud at how far I’ve come since I first stepped foot into the store in May 2019. From starting as a POS cashier while studying teaching at Vic Uni to now holding the position of Trade Manager, my time here has been a whirlwind of growth, challenges, and triumphs.
My journey began with humble beginnings, balancing my studies with part-time work on the shop floor. Little did I know that this initial step would kickstart a series of adventures leading me through various departments within the store. From Click & Collect to the retail floor, and eventually into the high-energy environment of the trade business, each transition brought its own set of challenges and learning opportunities.
One of the most memorable experiences was my stint as the only female in the trade yard. Surrounded by a team of supportive colleagues, I embraced the challenge wholeheartedly, eager to prove myself in a male-dominated environment. The camaraderie and encouragement I received fuelled my determination, making it one of my favourite roles to date.
But my journey didn’t stop there. With each new role came new responsibilities and opportunities for growth. From sales to dispatch and stock control, I seized every chance to broaden my skill set and deepen my understanding of the business. And when the role of Trade Manager was presented to me, I embraced it with open arms, relishing the chance to lead and inspire my team.
Big Decisions, and Big Accomplishments
The decision to stay at Mitre 10 and forego my teaching career wasn’t an easy one, but it was one driven by passion, ambition, and a desire to challenge the status quo. The vibrant culture, supportive environment, and flexible hours offered by Mitre 10 were too enticing to pass up. And as I navigated my way through various roles and responsibilities, I found myself drawn to the culture and way of working that fit in so well with the rest of my life.
One of the highlights from my time at Mitre 10 so far was being nominated for and winning the Emerging Leader Award in 2022. The recognition served as validation of my hard work and dedication, and the opportunity to undergo a leadership and management course further solidified my commitment to personal and professional development.
Looking back on my journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunities I’ve been given and the incredible people I’ve had the privilege of working alongside. From the bustling trade yard to the confines of the office, each experience has shaped me into the leader I am today.
As I continue to chart my course at Mitre 10, I’m excited for the challenges that lie ahead and the opportunities for growth and innovation that await. And while the path may be uncertain, one thing remains clear – with passion, determination, and a willingness to embrace the unknown, anything is possible.
